The premium tax credit does not pay a fixed amount. It caps what you pay for the benchmark plan (the second-lowest-cost Silver in your county) at a percentage of income, and pays the rest. For 2027 the percentage runs from 2.15% at the poverty line to 10.22% between 300% and 400% of it, and there is no credit above 400%: $63,840 for one person, $86,560 for a couple, $132,000 for a family of four. The table shows the percentage and the monthly cap at each income.
Premiums are set county by county and the credit is set by income, so no table can give a 1099 worker a final number. Enter your ZIP and a licensed agent prices every plan filed where you live against what you actually expect to earn.

“I run my own business and my time is valuable. Daniel handled everything — compared the private options, explained what I was actually getting, and had me covered fast. Way better experience than trying to navigate it myself.”

Poverty line used: $15,960 for one person plus $5,680 per additional person (HHS 2026 guidelines, which govern 2027 coverage). Percentages: Rev. Proc. 2026-26. Below 100% of the poverty line the marketplace credit is not available in most states (Medicaid rules apply instead). The cap is for the benchmark plan; a cheaper plan costs less than the cap, a dearer one more. Where the benchmark costs less than the cap, there is no credit even under the line.
