HSAs for 1099 workers

2027 HSA limits ($4,500 / $9,000), which marketplace plans qualify (every Bronze for 2027), the triple tax advantage, the above-the-line deduction, and how a 1099 worker pairs an HSA with a high-deductible plan.

An employee often gets an HSA with a match. A 1099 worker gets the account only by choosing the plan that allows it, and then gets more out of it than almost anyone: a deduction on the way in, no tax on growth, none on the way out for medical costs, and no employer rules.

Start with your ZIP and your income, not with a plan name

Premiums are set county by county and the credit is set by income, so no table can give a 1099 worker a final number. Enter your ZIP and a licensed agent prices every plan filed where you live against what you actually expect to earn.

Takes about 30 seconds. No account, and you choose how you are reached.

“I run my own business and my time is valuable. Daniel handled everything — compared the private options, explained what I was actually getting, and had me covered fast. Way better experience than trying to navigate it myself.”

The 2027 numbers

Why it is bigger for a 1099 worker

The contribution comes off above the line, so it lowers the income the premium tax credit is measured on as well as income tax; near the $63,840 line that can restore a credit worth more than the contribution. There is no employer match to lose by changing plans, and no plan year tied to a job. Money not spent stays invested; receipts kept today can be reimbursed, tax-free, decades later.

How it pairs with the plan choice

Over the line and healthy: a Bronze plan plus a full HSA contribution is the common structure, and in the states with no PPO the comparison is against a private plan with a national network. Under the line: the credit usually makes a Silver plan (with cost-sharing reductions below 250%% of poverty) the better year, and the HSA matters less. Either way the out-of-pocket maximum is the number to fund toward: $12,000 on any marketplace plan in 2027, $8,700 on an HSA-eligible one.

What it is not

Not available with an HMO or PPO that has a low deductible, not available once enrolled in Medicare, and not a reason to skip coverage: the HSA pays bills, the plan stops the worst year. A tax professional confirms eligibility month by month.
